November 10, 2023, the University of Vermont and Boston College kicked off their weekend of women’s hockey games against each other. Following a final score of 6-3 (BC) in the first game, UVM won the second of the weekend with a score of 3-2. Due to the tied 1-1 weekend, the teams will have a tiebreaker game at BC’s home rink on February 9, 2024. The game is expected to be close scoring.
Throughout the weekend there were many impressive plays, one of the most appreciated being by BC. The first game of the weekend entered the second period with a score of 3-0 (UVM), but BC would soon reverse this. Even with goalie Ellie Simmons’ (UVM) repeated saves and Sara Levesues (UVM) blocks, Abby Newhook (BC) eventually scored her first goal of the game and brought her team’s spirit back up, leading the team to victory.
The night following UVM’s loss was not overlooked by the team. While being interviewed about the next day’s comeback, Laura Beecher (UVM #9) remarked, “We were upset about the loss. But we have a game tomorrow so we had to bounce back, we had good confidence going in and kept boosting each other up.” So, was it BC’s overconfidence or UVMs determination that caused UVM’s comeback? That’s what February’s game will decide.
Laura Beechers’ words about her team did not end there, as she discusses her team’s confidence for the rest of the season. “Stay consistent, have fun, that’s just what we know how to do best.”
