On Thursday, November 14th, Smithtown High School East Leadership held their annual Powderpuff game on the Schroeder Turf.
The name Powderpuff originates from the makeup tool, a “powder puff,” which helps to set and blend makeup on one’s face. The goal of the Powderpuff football game is to emphasize that women can play football, too. The uniform consists of wearing a pink and black T-shirt to show support for breast cancer awareness.
This event was used as a way to raise money for Leadership to support other events they hold, such as Pep Rally. Every year, the East Leadership classes put together this event where only senior and junior girls can participate. In previous years, there was a series of small football games with teams of ten people, and the groups were self-selected. Members of the Varsity Football team were the girls’ coaches. They created defensive and offensive plays for the girls to execute to the best of their abilities. However, this year, there were two teams: juniors and seniors. They went head to head in a flag football game with the seniors coming out victorious.
East Social Studies teacher and Leadership advisor Mr. Toth states, “Powderpuff this year was the best year yet. Going from a tournament style to a single game of juniors vs seniors really brought out the competitiveness of both classes and was a great thing to see.” Senior Leadership student, Hailey D. states, “I loved how we joined together with the senior girls and were able to come together as one big team.”
This was a great way for the classes to unite in a fun event. If you are interested in planning events like this in the future, please reach out to Mr. Toth about what Leadership has to offer and guidance to help you enroll. And remember to get involved and show your school spirit!
