Marc Webb’s latest film, Snow White [film] hit theaters on March 21st, 2025. Coming in with a record low for Disney of 1.6/10 on IMBd and 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. This live-action remake of a beloved childhood film averaged a significantly low income at the box office at only $42 million in the first weekend.
Marc Webb, is best known for his work on 500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Gifted. His debut film was the romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer which scored 7.6/10 on IMBd and 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Webb is best known for his nuanced storytelling style of filmmaking, creating an emotionally resonant atmosphere that makes his films so special.
The idea for modernizing Snow White began in 2016. The film’s reconfiguration caused controversy amongst fans of the original movie. This was due to casting choices, character changes, and actor comments. Rachel Zegler, who is Latina, was cast as Snow White, which caused an uproar as she is not “as white as snow.”
Racism over casting decisions has been nothing new for Disney princesses. Last year, Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in the live-action The Little Mermaid film and faced a lot of backlash as well. Despite the controversy following Zegler’s casting, she continued to deliver a princess-worthy performance in the film.
We attended the film with high expectations due to our love of Disney, yet left disappointed. In my opinion, the use of CGI graphics was mediocre and unsettling at points, the acting was subpar and disengaging, the plot was lost at points, and we spent a lot of time in the theater waiting for something to happen, and we ended up leaving before the film even ended.
Although we like to be positive, we would not recommend anyone to waste their time or money on this film.
