SUNDAY: HOLLYWOOD L.A.: The infamous, and by infamous, I mean the highly controversial, Oscars took place. If you tuned in, you saw so much: speeches that ran on for way too long, outfits that had no place being on the red carpet, and celebrities showing off their new Ozempic look.
One thing you won’t see is Challengers getting the Oscar for Best Original Score. One word: Snub.
What exactly is a snub? The term “snub” is usually used to refer to a work or person that fails to be nominated or win an award. The Oscars are notorious for awarding mediocrity and robbing other movies of their much-needed praise. In the 2024 Oscars, The Iron Claw, starring Zac Efron, received an insulting zero nominations. This year, many disagreed with the Academy’s overlook of performances by Pamela Anderson in The Last Showgirl, or Daniel Craig in Queer.
This year’s controversy didn’t only stem from what wasn’t nominated, but what was. Emilia Perez, a musical starring Selena Gomez, Zoë Saldana, and Karla Sofia Gascón, has ignited an uproar among many cinephiles as they believe it didn’t even deserve to be considered. The film has been criticized for its offensive portrayals of the trans and Mexican communities, as well as its controversial cast members.
“I feel like sometimes people make too big a deal out of snubs. Is it a snub or are others better?” says astute film enthusiast Alyssa Santangelo.
Who knows what will go down next year? What films will be robbed of the glorious Academy win? Will another hilarious scandal occur? Tune in annually to see.
