“Bohemian Rhapsody” is widely known as one of the most influential and unique songs in all of human history.  Freddie Mercury is hailed as quite possibly the best vocalist of all time.  Now the film, Bohemian Rhapsody, which was released on November 2, is being praised as a foot-stomping homage to the late singer and his bandmates.

I entered the theater knowing that this movie was going to be good since I’m an avid Queen fan, but there’s no doubt that when I walked out I felt rejuvenated.  It was as if I knew Mercury himself, (or Farrokh Bulsara as he was named at birth).  The whole cinema lit up with thunderbolts and lightning as Queen’s music echoed throughout.

The music was extremely loud, but this only contributed to the authenticity of the movie.  I couldn’t help but smile as I felt like I was being transported to a live concert.  The songs were definitely the best part of the movie, and it was also very impressive to see the some of the most historical events in the band’s history recreated on screen such as the Live Aid concert in the summer of 1985. While the movie didn’t show their full Live Aid performance on stage, there’s a rumor going around that the producers are going to release a full shot-for-shot rehash of the concert when Bohemian Rhapsody is estimated to be released in February 2019 for DVD & streaming services.

Even though Mercury lived a life of fame and fortune, his persona behind the curtain and off-stage wasn’t as glamorous.  He longed for acceptance from his father at a young age, and he grappled with adversity against his homosexuality and drugs.  He had some tough obstacles that he had to face in the real world, and Egyptian actor, Rami Malek portrayed Mercury’s struggles beautifully.  These segments made me realize that even a man who has all the wealth and fame on-stage may feel unfulfilled off-stage, and that there are things in life to be more desired than such triviality.

Although no movie is perfect, it bothered me somewhat that the plot focused too much on Freddie Mercury.  I would’ve liked to see at least a little bit of the private life of other members of Queen.  As an example, guitarist Brian May, played by Gwilym Lee, could have been another focus of the movie.  After all, has been portrayed as the co-leader, along with Freddie, of the band.  This is only an insignificant fault in a movie that will surely rock you.  I recommend this film to any music lover.  Whether you like rap, R&B, country or pop, I guarantee this will be a cinematic experience like none other.  May Queen rest in peace with all the other kings of the past.
